Archive for February, 2009

All my life my family has told me the story of the 1980 Olympic Games at Lake Placid, New York.

On my birthday, they would say, “Remember Lake Placid,” or scribble it down in my birthday cards. The story starts 2 days before I was born. The “Miracle on Ice” was the nickname given to a February 22nd men’s ice hockey game during the 1980 Olympic Games, in which a team of amateur and college players from the United States defeated the Soviet Union team, who were considered to be the best international hockey team in the world.
The U.S. went on to win the Gold Medal by beating Finland (4–2) on the day I was born, my family was watching in the waiting room.

The Soviet Union took the Silver Medal by beating Sweden in their final game. Sweden took home the Bronze Medal, with Finland finishing fourth. As part of the its 100th anniversary celebrations in 2008, the International Ice Hockey Federation picked the Miracle on Ice as the number-one international hockey story of the century.

What does it mean? I guess it means that my parents and my family always wanted to remember the day as something extra special… you know, aside from me being born. 😉

So there I was, feeling old even though I’m not even thirty yet, and trying to decide what to do for my birthday. I was at work complaining that I don’t look 23 anymore which was apparently clear in the photos of me taken days before at the Botanic Gardens with Cheryl. A co-worker overheard me bitching and he says, “Oh please, are you complaining about your birthday? How old are you like 31?”

GASP. 31?! It might have been funny IF he was joking. And so my downward spiral of hating my birthday has begun.

“31? I’m turning 29!!!”

Darrin then gets the oh sh*t look on his face… and my beautiful 23 year old co-worker starts laughing hysterically.

So now in my head I am no longer 23, which is where I thought I would remain for some time… No, now in my head I am 31!

Despite the damage that had been done at work earlier that week, I had the most fantastic 29th bday a girl could ever hope for! Dinner with my nearest and dearest friends at Piranhas Killer Sushi, and drinks afterwards at a great little dive bar that just happened to have a Cure cover band playing that night. Followed by a fabulous lunch at Razoos on my actual birthday…. which just happened to be Fat Tuesday!

So to sum up:
Best Friends+
Cure Cover Band+
Ipod Dock from my loving man+
Fat Tuesday shirt from Razoos
Equals = Best 29th birthday a girl could ever have!

The CaptURE sang me a song. And I apparently did the robot.

I make the scariest dance faces you have EVER seen.
